Overview

BREEAM In-Use is a comprehensive and holistic environmental assessment method for assessing and rating the sustainability of existing, commercial assets.  It provides a framework to help owners, managers and occupiers of existing assets successfully adopt sustainable solutions in a cost-effective manner and provides market recognition for their achievements.

The new BREEAM AP (Advisory Professional) Operations qualification is specifically focused on the operational phase of the asset lifecycle. To earn the AP Operations credential, learners must complete this training course and successfully pass an exam.  This course includes online modules and one 4-hour virtual classroom session delivered by BRE.  Learners are required to complete the online modules before their scheduled classroom session.  The exam is proctored online through a third party and scheduled by the learner.

The training course is specifically designed for built environment professionals that are working with existing buildings of all types.  The training focuses on how the learner can maximize the value their clients gain from using BREEAM In-Use and successfully supporting their assets through the BREEAM assessment process.

Currently, this training and credential is limited to US-based individuals only.  It will be expanded to include other geographies in due course.  Course fees include the training, exam administration and the first year of the credential.

AP Operations credential

The AP Operations credential provides recognition that the individual has the skills and experience needed to inform and guide asset management teams in their individual and collective decision-making and evidence preparation to maximize the value of the BREEAM In-Use process.

The credential gives you:

  • A listing on our global database for BREEAM professionals
  • The ability to submit technical questions on behalf of clients
  • Regular communications to help maintain your knowledge of the BREEAM program
  • Access to tools and information exclusive for APs and Assessors

Maintaining the credential requires fifteen hours of sustainability-themed professional development time (not necessarily BREEAM specific) and an annual fee of $325.

Prerequisites for Attendance

Advisory Professionals are expected to have sufficient knowledge and experience in relevant professions to be able to support their clients with soft skills.  For this training, Candidates are required to have at least one year of full-time experience (within the last five years) in one or more of the following professions or equivalent:

  • Building surveying
  • Building Engineering or regulatory (control) services
  • Building or Facilities Management
  • Product or manufacturing auditing
  • Certification experience in the built environment
  • Environmental/energy services

These backgrounds should provide the knowledge needed to understand the technical criteria set out in the Technical Manual.  It should be noted that these professions are not exhaustive but are meant to provide individuals seeking to become Assessors an opportunity to consider what knowledge and experience is needed to ensure the BREEAM USA In-Use standards for assessment are met.

Training Program

The course is delivered virtually through self-study modules and one 4-hour session and includes:

  • Review of the USA In-Use Technical Standards for Commercial, Residential and Residential Plus
  • Roles and responsibilities of BREEAM Professionals in the program
  • Driving value through the benchmarking process
  • Evidence gathering and verification
  • Successfully supporting clients through the assessment process

Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the BREEAM USA In-Use standards prior to the course to ensure they maximize their learning during the course.

Examination

In order to become an AP, you will need to pass an exam after successfully completing the training course.  The exam is administered online.  BRE works with ProctorU, a US-based organization, to remotely proctor and verify learners’ identity before they undertake course examinations.  To enable this, the personal data you provide to us will be passed onto ProctorU to verify the learner’s identity, and the learners will be required to sign up to their site to take the exam.  For more information on ProctorU’s privacy policy and their Privacy Shield credentials, please go to https://www.proctoru.com/privacy-policy/.
