BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for masterplanning projects, infrastructure and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment. BREEAM does this through third party certification of the assessment of an asset’s environmental, social and economic sustainability performance, using standards developed by BRE Global Ltd.
The role of Assessors is vital to the BREEAM certification process. Qualified and licensed BREEAM Assessors work with project teams to conduct the assessment of a building/asset prior to checking by the certification body, BRE Global Ltd. This process puts Assessors at the forefront in driving industry change towards a more sustainable built environment.
On successful completion of the course and examinations, you will emerge as a fully qualified BREEAM International New Construction (NC) assessor and can apply for the relevant Assessor licence.
BREEAM International New Construction Assessor training commences with approximately 30 hours of interactive online modules delivered through our dedicated online learning portal (BRE.AC Moodle). You will be led on a journey into BREEAM by way of interactive content and technical presentations, which will gradually build your knowledge and confidence with the BREEAM International NC scheme. You can complete these modules at your own pace, throughout the modules there are quiz questions so you can check your understanding as you progress through the course. the modules are:
- Module 1 – An introduction to BREEAM
- Module 2 – The BREEAM International and Bespoke processes, reporting and evidence requirements
- Module 3 – Technical modules; Management, Health & Wellbeing, Energy, Transport
- Module 4 – Technical modules; Water, Materials, Waste, Land Use & Ecology, Pollution
Following the online learning phase, you will attend 2 days of classroom based learning which will consolidate your understanding and newly acquired knowledge. Through workshops and group learning activities, we will refine your understanding gained through the online training, moving onto the more complex and technical aspects of the scheme. You will be fully supported by a dedicated tutor.
For the classroom course trainees will sit an Initial Test at the start of the day based on the online learning programme. Trainees will then participate in interactive workshops and group learning activities to help them understand some of the technical issues in more depth and review issues in a wider context. Topics covered are the BREEAM processes and a review of technical Issues Ene01, Mat01 and Mat03
Covers adapting BREEAM for different building types and looks at BREEAM in a wider context. The day also looks at the scope of BREEAM, examination information and the BREEAM Quality Assurance process. In addition, there is also a question and answer (Q&A) session.
Third Day – Online Examinations:
The day and time will need to be set by individual trainees directly with ProctorU* for a date that is suitable to both parties.
There are two separate examinations that trainees need to successfully pass before they are classified as competent (qualified) from where they can then apply for a licence to enable them to assess projects, BREEAM Assessors will need to pass both examinations to become qualified for the scheme.
- BREEAM General Understanding examination
- BREEAM International NC Technical examination
Both examinations are an ‘open book’ type. You can use any document related to the course to aid you with the examination(s) either in paper format (these can be your own handwritten notes, note cards, etc) or in PDF copies (the latter must be taken directly from the actual course on the BRE.AC Moodle eLearning website).
Sustainability is at the heart of BRE, and we take our impact on the environment very seriously. As part of our concerted effort to reduce our impact we have taken the positive decision to go ‘paperless’. You will be provided with high quality handouts, technical manuals and associated training material, but rather than these being paper based, we will provide your supporting resources electronically in PDF format. Having your training notes in an electronic format is not only good for the environment it also means you can keep your notes on your portable computer/ electronic tablet to use at your convenience to aid you with your training programme. Please note that if you wish, you can bring along your own paper versions to the classroom course and use as a reference point during the examinations but please consider the environment before printing.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
At the end of this course you will have a thorough understanding of the BREEAM process, specifically for the BREEAM International New Construction scheme. On successful completion of the course and the examinations you will be issued with notification that verifies your BREEAM Assessor qualification. You will then be required to apply to BRE Global Ltd to become a Licenced BREEAM Assessor under the Scheme in order to practice and carry out assessments. You must make this application within 12 months of the initial examination day.
To practice as a licenced BREEAM Assessor you will be required to pay annual licence fees and hold adequate levels of professional insurance, particularly professional indemnity insurance. Further information on the route to becoming a licenced BREEAM Assessor can be found at www.breeam.com
